Employee National Insurance is 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above that. The Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000, so it disappears completely at £125,140.

Why take-home pay doesn't rise in a straight line

As your salary grows, more of each extra pound falls into higher bands. A basic-rate taxpayer keeps about 72p of each extra pound (20% tax + 8% NI). Above £50,270 you keep about 58p (40% + 2%). Between £100,000 and £125,140 you keep only about 38p, because the Personal Allowance is being withdrawn at the same time.

Paying into a pension through salary sacrifice is one of the most effective ways to keep more of your pay in these bands. Try it with the pension field in the UK calculator, or check a one-off payment with the bonus tax calculator.

Scottish taxpayers have different Income Tax bands, so their results will differ. Figures are estimates and not tax advice.
