How UK take-home pay is calculated in 2026/27
Your take-home pay is your gross salary minus Income Tax, employee National Insurance and anything you pay into a pension. This calculator uses HMRC rates for the 2026/27 tax year, which runs from 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027, for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Income Tax bands
| Band | Taxable income | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Allowance | Up to £12,570 | 0% |
| Basic rate | £12,571 to £50,270 | 20% |
| Higher rate | £50,271 to £125,140 | 40% |
| Additional rate | Over £125,140 | 45% |
The Personal Allowance is reduced by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000. This means income between £100,000 and £125,140 is effectively taxed at 60%, one of the most important thresholds to plan around.
National Insurance
Employees pay Class 1 National Insurance at 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 a year and 2% on anything above. Unlike Income Tax, NI is the same in every part of the UK.
Worked example: £30,000 salary
On £30,000 the first £12,570 is tax-free. The remaining £17,430 is taxed at 20%, which is £3,486 of Income Tax. National Insurance is 8% of £17,430, which is £1,394. Your take-home pay is £25,120 a year, or £2,093 a month. See the full £30,000 breakdown.
How pensions reduce your tax
With salary sacrifice, your pension contribution comes out of your pay before tax and NI are worked out, so a £100 contribution can cost a basic-rate taxpayer as little as £72. Enter a percentage in the pension field above to see the effect on your pay.
