How to compare salaries between countries

A higher gross salary does not always mean more money in your pocket. Income tax, social security and deductions differ a lot between countries, so the fair way to compare job offers is to compare take-home pay, converted into one currency.

What is included

Each side uses the same 2026 rules as our individual calculators: the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands, France and Spain, India, Pakistan, UAE and Saudi Arabia. It assumes a single person with no children using the standard allowances.

What it does not include

Cost of living matters too: rent, healthcare, childcare and transport vary widely. A salary that is 20% higher after tax may still buy less in an expensive city. Use the result as a starting point, then compare living costs.

USA uses federal tax and FICA for a state without income tax; Canada uses Ontario; Saudi Arabia assumes an expatriate. Not financial advice.
