Reduced rates apply to some goods and services (food, books, energy, hospitality). Always check the rate for your product.
How to add and remove VAT
Adding VAT
Multiply the price before VAT by the VAT rate. At the UK rate of 20%, VAT on £100 is £20, so the price including VAT is £120. A quick way is to multiply by 1.2.
Removing VAT (reverse VAT)
Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1 plus the rate. To remove 20% VAT from £120, divide by 1.2 to get £100. A common mistake is taking 20% off £120, which gives £96, the wrong answer.
VAT changes in 2026
Standard rates were unchanged in most countries in 2026, but several reduced rates moved: Ireland cut hospitality to 9% from 1 July 2026, Finland cut its main reduced rate to 13.5%, Belgium raised some reduced-rate services to 12%, and Slovakia moved high-sugar and high-salt foods to 23%.
Rates shown are standard rates as of July 2026. Businesses should confirm rates with the relevant tax authority (HMRC, Revenue, the EU VAT database). Not tax advice.
