How US take-home pay is calculated in 2026

Your US paycheck is your gross pay minus federal income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), state income tax and any pre-tax deductions such as a 401(k). This calculator uses 2026 federal brackets and the standard deduction for your filing status.

2026 federal tax brackets (single filers)

Taxable incomeRate
Up to $12,40010%
$12,400 to $50,40012%
$50,400 to $105,70022%
$105,700 to $201,77524%
$201,775 to $256,22532%
$256,225 to $640,60035%
Over $640,60037%

The 2026 standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household. It comes off your income before the brackets apply.

FICA taxes

Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500. Medicare is 1.45% of all wages, plus an extra 0.9% above $200,000 for single filers ($250,000 for married couples).

State income tax

Nine states, including Texas, Florida, Washington and Nevada, have no state income tax on wages. In other states, enter your state's rate to include it.

How a 401(k) helps

Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal and most state income tax, so they lower your tax bill at your marginal rate. Add them in the pre-tax field to see the difference.

Local and city taxes, credits and itemized deductions are not included. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
