How Canadian income tax is calculated in 2026
Your take-home pay in Canada is your gross income minus federal income tax, provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions and Employment Insurance (EI) premiums. Everyone pays the same federal tax, but provincial tax depends on where you live on December 31.
Federal tax brackets 2026
| Taxable income | Federal rate |
|---|---|
| Up to $58,523 | 14% |
| $58,523 to $117,045 | 20.5% |
| $117,045 to $181,440 | 26% |
| $181,440 to $258,482 | 29% |
| Over $258,482 | 33% |
The federal basic personal amount of $16,452 means the first part of your income is effectively tax-free. Credits for CPP, EI and the Canada employment amount reduce your tax further.
CPP and EI in 2026
CPP is 5.95% of earnings between $3,500 and $74,600, plus a second tier (CPP2) of 4% on earnings between $74,600 and $85,000. EI premiums are 1.63% of insurable earnings up to $68,900. These are deducted from almost every paycheque until you reach the yearly maximum.
Provincial tax
Each province sets its own brackets and credits. Ontario also adds a surtax and the Ontario Health Premium, while Alberta has a much higher basic personal amount. Choose your province above to include it.
Moving from 2025 to 2026
If you are comparing with a 2025 individual tax calculator, the biggest change is the lowest federal rate, which fell to 14% for 2026. Brackets and CPP/EI limits are also indexed each year, so the same salary usually gives slightly higher take-home pay in 2026.
How an RRSP lowers your tax
RRSP contributions are deducted from your taxable income, so you save tax at your marginal rate. Enter an amount in the RRSP field to see how much it reduces your tax.
Quebec uses its own tax system and QPP, so results for Quebec residents will differ. Results are estimates, not tax advice.
